I will play the lead only if it is a definite character: Sanjay

Jhankaar Beats came as a boon for Sanjay Suri as it gave him a chance to exhibit his real talent. The young, well-built actor feels that this film has opened the gates for character roles that he had been looking for since a long time.

Claims Suri, “This film is just the beginning. It has given me a chance to explore character roles. In Jhankaar Beats I play a married man who is not very happy that his mother-in-law is coming to his house. He often discusses his family problems with his friend Rishi (Rahul Bose). These issues are dealt with in a way that the viewer laughs at himself while dealing with these problems. All this calls for real hard work as you are putting before the audience that which is not very obvious.”
Suri, whose earlier films – Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi and Filhaal – did not do too well at the box office, feels that this movie will help him get more character roles. “The success of Dil Chahta Hai has proved that there is scope for young and trendy films in Bollywood,” says Suri.
“We know there are producers who want to do films with a serious subject. There is an urban audience that likes such films,” he adds.
Would you not like to do the lovey-dovey hero roles that give instant stardom? “I would like to do roles in which I am comfortable. If every producer wants to make a film like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge , it is not going to work.”
But Suri is quick to add, “I will play a lead role in a film only if it has a definite character in it. I don’t want to embarrass myself by doing something to just achieve stardom. I am clear on the roles that I want to do and I know that the sky is the limit.” Suri feels that “commercial, but sensible cinema” will pay in the long run. For him the dream role is of a historical character.
“That would be challenging as it would bring out an actor’s real spirit,” feels Suri. He knows that he will have to wait as few historicals are made in Bollywood. Presently, he’s working on Pinjar with Manoj Bajpai and Urmila. He also has Insaaf where he plays an IAS officer.
